Meet the Clever Little Fox

There’s something special about the fox, clever, curious, a little mischievous, and always finding comfort in the quiet corners of the forest.
This one began, with a ball of orange yarn I found in a tiny shop in Richmond, wandering with a friend on a slow afternoon. I knew I wanted to make little crochet animals and the orange felt warm, like autumn leaves and spiced tea. By the time his tail curled into shape, I knew he would become one of my favourite little creatures.
Today, I’m so happy to share his pattern with you — so you can bring your own fox to life.
What You’ll Need
Any cotton yarn in your chosen colours (I used orange & white)
Recommended hook size for your yarn (I always go one size smaller for neat stitches)
5 mm safety eyes
Stuffing
Yarn needle
Scissors
Stitch marker (I use a contrasting colour of yarn for this)

A note on yarn
You can use any cotton yarn thin or thick. The pattern works beautifully either way.
The Fox in these photos uses the orange cotton from my Richmond walk.
I also made a second version with chunky velvet yarn and a 5mm hook, using the exact same pattern — no adjustments needed.
He came out unbelievably cute and squishy.

Row 8 - 12 : sc in each st (5 rounds). (38)
Row 13-change colour to white but do not cut the orange yarn yet. This row is the transition row to make it a seamless colour change from orange to white.

Pull up a loop of white yarn in the first stitch, secure it by making a knot with the orange at the back. Insert your hook into the next stitch.

Pull the orange yarn, then pull the white yarn through both colours to complete a single crochet. You will have the white yarn on your hook which determines the colour of the next round.
Repeat this until the end of the row, switching between colours, bottom stitch is orange, top yarn is white. You can now cut the orange yarn and continue working with the white colour.
Row 14-15 : White colour only, sc in each st for 2 rounds. (38)

Row 14 - 3sc, slip stitch and cut the yarn with 20 cm tail to use to attach the head.
Stuff the body firmly and move on to attaching the head.
Attaching the head

Place the head on the body and secure it with pins. Sew it in using the ladder stitch to stop it flopping, you will need to go around the neck, over the arms and weave in the tail of the yarn.
Tip: stuff the head and body once more before closing the stitches in the neck.
Attaching the ears
Place the ears on the head and secure it with pins. Sew it in using the ladder stitch.

Attaching the snout
Place the snout on the face and secure it with pins. Sew it in using the ladder stitch as shown above. You don’t need to stuff the snout, the end yarns from the crochet should be enough to fill it.

Using black thread and a tapestry needle, make the nose and mouth. Enter at the back of the head and come out from the same point when done. You can then tie a knot and hide it inside.

Attach the tail
Place the snout on the face and secure it with pins. Sew it in using the ladder stitch.

A Few Extra Tips
Stuff firmly so he keeps his sweet round shape.
Stitch the nose gently with thin black thread for a neat finish.
When attaching the snout, a little extra stuffing makes it stand out perfectly.
Don’t rush — the assembly is where his personality appears.
Your little crochet fox is ready!

Make It Yours
Your fox won’t look exactly like mine and that’s the magic.
Try different yarns, different colours, or even add a little scarf, tiny satchel or acorn for autumn.
These small details turn a pattern into your own story.
If you do make him, I’d truly love to see.
Share your fox on Instagram and tag @alexa_and_rosie or use #AlexaAndRosieFox so I can celebrate it with you.
